Don’t feel left out if you haven’t heard of Apple TV up until now, as, compared to Apple’s other products, very little marketing has gone into what Steve Jobs tells us is his ‘hobby’. At its most basic, Apple TV (or ATV) is Apple’s foray into the HTPC market and consists of a digital media receiver for streaming iTune based video, music and rental movies to your TV.
What’s on the box?
The Apple TV device isn’t exactly groundbreaking and doesn’t really do anything particularly spectacular. In fact, most recent Blu-Ray machines can do much more. On the upside, like Apple’s other devices, the unit has been designed to be good looking and practical. On the downside, also like Apple’s other devices, there’s no support for media services that Apple see as competitors to their own media ecosystem. That means very little support for video formats that iTunes doesn’t support. What’s more, movies rented from iTunes need to watched within a 24-hour time frame. Not exactly user-friendly.

Now, Apple TV mark II is on the way. The new device is much smaller and very much based on the iPhone 4, right down to the operating system, A4 CPU and 16GBs of flash storage. In fact, it’s a bit like an iPhone without the screen, or should that be a screenless iPhone with an HDMI output?
‘What? Only 16GBs of storage?’ I hear you cry. True, you won’t be able to store many episodes of Coronation Street on that. Past versions of the ATV had 40GB and 160GB, but now Apple are moving towards Cloud storage for files, possibly to open up yet another revenue stream running in conjunction with iTunes sales. The other benefit for Apple and (perhaps) the consumer is that without hard drive storage, production costs are significantly lower. With no screen, there’s plenty of space left for other interfaces too. These include HDMI, Ethernet and mini-USBs. Of course, there’s also the obigatory Bluetooth.
The ideal Christmas box?
It all sounds fairly good. The new ATV will let you stream media from any Apple device to your TV, but it’s also worth pointing out that the iPhone could do this too, if it had an appropriate output. On the plus side, the lack of hard drive will allow the device to be sold at a very attractive price – as little as ?99, if the rumours are to be believed. With Christmas coming up, this positions the new ATV as an ideal gift for the festive season.
But if you’re planning to surprise a loved one with Apple’s latest gadget, just remember Google TV is just around the corner too and that is set to come with ‘full’ Internet and Flash support and without the limitations of Apple’s closed ecosystem.
